Large posters, patterns, drawings, and signs can be printed without an A2- or A1-capable printer by splitting the source across ordinary sheets such as A4 and assembling them afterward.

A simple four-way image crop is usually not enough. Finished dimensions can drift, printer margins can cut content, and assembly positions can become unclear. Large Print Tiler converts PDF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, and SVG sources into tiled PDFs while keeping finished physical size, paper settings, margins, and overlap explicit. This guide explains the workflow for printing and assembling those tiles at the intended scale.

Start by deciding how the finished size should be defined

For tiled printing, the first question is not simply how many sheets to use, but how the physical finished size should be defined. Large Print Tiler provides three sizing modes: source size, finished size, and sheet count.

Use source size when a PDF already has the correct real-world dimensions, finished size when you know a target such as 600 mm wide, and sheet count when the practical constraint is something like three A4 sheets across by two down.

Paper size, printer margins, and overlap determine the real tile layout

Choose A4, A3, or Letter, then set portrait or landscape orientation, printer margins, and overlap. The physical sheet size is not always the same as the printable area, so non-borderless printers need enough margin to keep content away from unreachable edges.

Overlap repeats a small strip of content on neighboring sheets. That makes alignment easier than joining exact boundaries, but it reduces the effective area of each sheet and can increase the total tile count.

Supported PDFs can be tiled without rasterizing their page content

If a large PDF is first rasterized and then tiled, text and thin vector lines can become visibly softer when enlarged. For supported PDFs, Large Print Tiler keeps the page content as PDF content instead of rasterizing it, preserving text and vector graphics in the generated tiled PDF.

Document-level features are a different matter. Interactive annotations, forms, and links are not intended to be preserved as live objects in the tiled output, and encrypted or password-protected PDFs are unsupported. Treat the result as a PDF intended for printing and assembly.

For raster images, check physical size and effective PPI

When PNG or JPEG files contain supported print-resolution metadata, Large Print Tiler can derive their physical size from it. If usable physical-size information is missing, the app does not silently assume a value such as 72 or 300 DPI; set the finished size explicitly instead.

For raster images, the app also shows effective PPI at the selected finished size. A 3000-pixel-wide image is about 300 PPI at 254 mm wide, but the effective resolution drops sharply when enlarged toward one metre. This lets you judge not only whether the layout can be tiled, but whether the source resolution is likely to be adequate. SVG physical units are read, but SVG content is currently rasterized when written into the tiled PDF.

Use trim lines, registration marks, and page IDs for assembly

Before saving, the preview can show the complete tiling grid, overlap, trim positions, registration marks, and page IDs. When a design spans many sheets, page IDs make it much easier to see where each printed page belongs.

The IDs retain the original PDF page number. If page 2 is excluded, tiles from pages 1 and 3 remain P01 and P03 rather than being renumbered. You can also add an assembly map for each selected source page and use it together with the IDs after printing.

Print the tiled PDF at 100% / Actual size

Even if the app creates a PDF with the correct physical dimensions, a PDF viewer or printer driver can still rescale it during printing. When dimensions matter, print the final tiled PDF at 100%, Actual size, or the equivalent setting.

Disable options such as Fit, Fit to page, or Shrink oversized pages. Small scale differences may not matter for a decorative poster, but they can be important for patterns, templates, and drawings.

Use the 100 mm calibration PDF when 100% printing is still inaccurate

Some printer and PDF-viewer combinations still produce a small scale error even at 100%. Large Print Tiler can generate a 100 mm calibration PDF so you can print it, measure the horizontal and vertical references, and apply independent X/Y correction.

For example, if a 100 mm reference prints as 98 mm, the correction factor is 100 / 98, or about 102.04%. You do not change the requested finished size to 102.04%; keep the intended dimensions and apply the printer correction to the generated PDF coordinates.

Large Print Tiler and Max Text Print solve different printing problems

Browser Kitty also includes Max Text Print for placing short text as large as possible on an A4 page. Use Max Text Print when the job is to create oversized words such as SALE, Reception, or Entrance; use Large Print Tiler when an existing PDF, image, or SVG needs to be split across multiple sheets.

Source parsing and PDF generation run in the browser

PDF, image, and SVG files selected in Large Print Tiler are not uploaded by the app to an external server. Parsing, preview, tiling calculations, printer calibration, and PDF generation run in the browser, and PDF.js plus its worker are embedded in the generated HTML.

The GitHub Pages and Browser Kitty versions still need the initial HTML request, but the generated app uses a CSP containing connect-src 'none' to block runtime external connections after load. Very large PDFs and high-resolution images are therefore constrained mainly by the browser, device memory, and canvas limits rather than a server-side processing limit.

Step by step

  1. Open Large Print Tiler and choose a PDF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, or SVG file. For a multi-page PDF, also choose which source pages to include.
  2. Choose Source size, Finished size, or Sheet count as the sizing mode.
  3. Set A4, A3, or Letter paper, portrait or landscape orientation, printer margins, and overlap.
  4. Use the tiling preview to confirm sheet count, tile boundaries, and overlap, then enable trim lines, registration marks, or page IDs if useful.
  5. For raster images, check the effective PPI at the selected finished size.
  6. Select an individual tile and inspect the actual generated sheet preview.
  7. Add an assembly map for each selected source page if needed and confirm the output filename.
  8. If physical dimensions matter and printer scaling is inaccurate, print the 100 mm calibration PDF, measure both axes, and configure X/Y correction.
  9. Save the tiled PDF, then print it at 100% / Actual size with Fit or automatic shrinking disabled.

Tips and limitations

  • On a typical printer, set margins to match the real printable area before increasing overlap so edge clipping is less likely.
  • For layouts that span many sheets, enable page IDs and assembly maps before exporting so printed pages are easier to sort.
  • Raster-image effective PPI drops as finished size grows, so check likely image quality as well as the number of sheets.
  • For patterns or drawings where dimensions matter, verify the printer-driver scaling settings in addition to the generated PDF itself.
  • Very large images and PDFs can hit browser memory or canvas limits, so practical source sizes vary by device.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split an A2 or A1 PDF across A4 sheets?

Yes. If the PDF carries its physical page size, you can tile it onto A4 using Source size. You can also use Finished size or Sheet count when that better matches the job.

Are PDF text and lines converted to images?

For supported PDFs, the page content is tiled without rasterizing it, so text and vector graphics can be preserved. Interactive annotations, forms, and links are not part of the preservation target.

What happens when a PNG or JPEG has no usable DPI information?

The app does not invent a print DPI. Set the finished size explicitly and review the effective PPI for that size.

Can I tile an SVG?

Yes. Physical SVG units are read directly, and px values use the CSS reference conversion of 96 px/in. SVG content is currently rasterized when written into the tiled PDF.

The finished size is still wrong even when I print at 100%. What should I do?
