When you are asked to submit a paper application or handwritten form as a PDF, you can use your phone even without a scanner.

Simply converting a photograph into a PDF can leave the paper tilted or include part of the desk. For a document you need to submit, it is better to crop to the page and make sure the text stays legible.

This guide shows how to use Browser Kitty's Submission PDF Scanner to correct a photographed page and combine several sheets into one PDF. No app installation or account is required.

It also explains how to choose A4 and work toward a 1 MB or 2 MB file-size limit when a submission portal specifies one.

First, check the recipient's requirements

Check the submission instructions before photographing your document.

Common requirements include PDF format, A4 pages, black and white, or files smaller than 2 MB. You may also be asked to combine several pages into one file.

File-size limits deserve special attention. If the limit is 1 MB, the PDF you actually save must fit within that limit.

When color is not required, focus on legible text and stamps. For red seals or faint handwriting, preserving color may give a clearer result.

1. Place the paper flat and take a photo

Photograph the paper in a bright place, with the document lying as flat as possible.

A white document on a white desk can be difficult to detect. A background with a slightly different color helps the tool identify its corners.

Keep the following points in mind when taking the photograph.

Leaving a little space around the page is fine because you can correct it later. The priority is to avoid cutting off the text or any part of the sheet.

  • Keep all four corners visible
  • Photograph as close to directly overhead as possible
  • Keep shadows from your phone or hands off the paper
  • Check that the text is in focus

2. Import photos into Submission PDF Scanner

Open Submission PDF Scanner in the browser on your phone.

If you want to capture a new photo, choose Start camera and allow camera access. The camera is off when the page first opens, so you can activate it only when needed.

If the photographs are already saved on your phone, use Add images to import them.

If the browser camera is unavailable, take pictures in your phone's normal camera app and then import them.

3. Align the four corners and correct the skew

The tool detects the four corners after you import a photo.

Check that the green outline follows the edge of the paper. If it does not, drag the round handles at the four corners to adjust it.

Even a sheet photographed at an angle can be made more rectangular by aligning its corners. This also removes much of the desk or other background.

Be careful not to crop out text or stamps. Review the corrected result to make sure the boundary has not been moved too far inward.

Perspective correction fixes the shape and tilt, not a blurry original photo. Retake the photograph if its text is out of focus.

4. Choose color, grayscale, or black and white

Once the page is straight, choose the output treatment that makes the text easiest to read.

Submission PDF Scanner offers No enhancement, Auto, Color, Grayscale, and Black & White settings.

Black and white can look cleaner for printed black text. But faint pencil writing or red correction stamps may be harder to see after a monochrome conversion.

If you are unsure, switch between the modes and compare the preview.

When it looks right, choose Add this page.

5. Combine several pages into one PDF

Capture, correct, and add each subsequent page in the same way.

The added pages appear in a list. Drag their cards to put them in the correct order.

For a two-sided form or attached documents, check that the sequence matches the recipient's instructions.

If one page needs adjusting later, reopen it for editing rather than restarting the whole document.

6. Set A4 and file-size limits

After arranging the pages, open the Submission PDF settings.

Submission PDF Scanner offers Standard, 1 MB, 2 MB, A4, and Black & White presets. You can also set paper size, output color, and maximum file size individually.

For a submission requiring A4 and no more than 2 MB, set the paper size to A4 and the file-size limit to 2 MB.

When you specify a size limit, the tool reduces image quality and resolution where needed to make the file smaller.

Some documents may still exceed the limit, especially if they have many pages, photos, or fine text. More aggressive reduction can also make the text harder to read.

Do not stop at choosing the settings: check the actual size of the generated PDF.

You can set the filename here too.

7. Generate and save the PDF

After setting the options, choose Generate PDF.

Check the finished PDF's actual size and appearance before saving it.

Pay particular attention to small print, signatures, stamps, and the page order.

If everything looks right, download it to your phone. Sharing is also available in supported browsers.

Pages in the working session are kept in browser memory. They are cleared if you close or reload the tab, so make sure to save the finished PDF.

Can you also scan documents with built-in iPhone or Android features?

Your phone may already have a document-scanning feature.

On iPhone you can scan documents from Notes or Files. On Android, the Google Drive app also has document scanning.

If these features meet your needs, there is no reason to use a separate tool.

When the recipient specifies A4 or a file-size limit such as 1 MB or 2 MB, a tool that lets you control both paper size and compression can be useful.

If you already have clean, properly cropped photos, you can also follow the image-to-PDF guide. For paper photographed at an angle, a document scanner with perspective correction is more suitable.

Troubleshooting common scanning problems

The page's corners are not detected correctly

If the paper and background look similar, automatic detection may drift. Change the background, avoid shadows and reflections, or align the four corners manually.

The camera does not start

Check the browser's camera permissions. If that does not work, take photographs with your phone's camera app and import them with Add images.

The PDF is still larger than 1 MB

Some documents cannot be reduced enough because of page count or image content. Do not sacrifice legibility simply to make the file smaller: check the recipient's instructions and whether you can split the document.

Are the photographed documents sent to a server?

Submission PDF Scanner handles image correction and PDF generation inside the browser on your phone.

It does not upload the photographed documents or intermediate PDF content to Browser Kitty servers for processing.

This means you can work on applications or contracts that contain personal information without introducing another destination for the document data.

However, when you upload the finished PDF to a submission website, the file is sent to that recipient.

The tool does not include OCR (optical character recognition). If you need to search or copy text from the PDF, you will need an OCR-capable method.

Summary

You can create a PDF of a paper document with your phone by photographing the sheet and correcting its tilt, without using a dedicated scanner.

The important part is not just creating a PDF: the text must remain legible, the pages must be in order, and the result must meet the recipient's size limit.

When you need A4 pages or a specific file-size target, try Submission PDF Scanner on your phone.
